Foundation School of Martial Arts: Submission Gi Grappling Competition

This is an friendly inter-club, round-robin tournament. All competitors are welcome regardless of club or experience.

This is a round robin competition so competitors will face everyone in their bracket, an ideal opportunity to gain experience.

All competitors will have the opportunity to enter the absolute competition which is a knock out tournament.

At the end of the day competitors will be placed 1st, 2nd & 3rd in their respective bracket based on the number of points accumulated the. In the event of a draw for 1st place, head-to-head and overall number of submissions will be used to determine the winner. In cases where these are also equal then a play-off match will take place.

Weigh in will take place from 10am - 10:45am with the first matches starting at 11:15am.

Depending on numbers we reserve the right to combine brackets/move competitors up or down into a weight class or change the competition structure from round-robin to knock-out.

Competitors Fee: £12.00 (with optional free entry into absolute division)
Spectator Fee: £1.00

GENERAL RULES:

1. We expect appropriate conduct and respect to be displayed by all competitors and will not tolerate inappropriate behaviour by anyone (coaches, spectators and competitors). We ask that all attendees show restraint during the competition and that all attendees understand that any inappropriate gestures, violence or abuse of officials will result in disqualification.

2. Each match lasts 4 minutes

3. All competitors are to wear the traditional Gi uniform. Mouth-guard & groin protectors are optional (but recommended).

4: A victory is scored either by forcing your opponent to tap by submission (choke, arm lock & straight leg-lock) or when an opponent taps out or yells out stop. A submission may also be called at the discretion of the referee if they believe a competitor is in danger of becoming injured.

Matches can only be won by submissions, it is in the best interest of competitors to secure takedowns, positions and submission. Following a submission, competitors will be reset for the remainder of the time limit.

The competitor with the most submissions at the end of the match will win the bout. Winning competitors will be awarded 3 points with a draw awarding both competitors 1 point. 

5. Striking, biting, head-butting, gouging, joint manipulation (fingers & toes), hair pulling, grabbing the windpipe and ear pulling will result in disqualification.

6. Slamming your opponent to the ground to escape a submission or pass the guard or standing from guard and jumping from a standing position to slam your opponent will not be permitted. Slamming will result in a warning followed by disqualification. Takedowns are NOT considered slams but you must deliver your opponent safely to the mat with continuous motion and without additional force.

7. The only submission allowed below the waist is a straight ankle lock.

8. Wristlocks, bicep/calf slicers (crushers), neck cranks, and spine locks are illegal in all divisions.

9. Competitors will be allowed to continue grappling anywhere on their matted area, provided they don’t interfere with another match. If the competitors approach the edge of the mat, they will be restarted from the same position, unless the referee is unable to duplicate the position for any reason. In case the referee is unable to duplicate the position, the competitors will restart from a standing position.

10. If a competitor flees the ring when a submission is locked in and the competitor is obviously fleeing to avoid submission, he or she will be automatically disqualified.
