Although Winter Haven BJJ was founded in July 2021, Coach Melvin Thompson, 1st Degree Black Belt, has been teaching students the art of Jiu-Jitsu in North and Central Florida for over a decade. He has a true passion for the sport and his style of teaching is unlike most instructors you will find these days. He engages with his students and makes sure everybody understands the technique before moving on. And you will never find him just standing to the side while his students are warming up... He's always right there leading by positive example doing the exercises too! Our mission has always been to combine tradition and innovation, emphasizing self-defense and self-discovery rather than competition. We pride ourselves on inner development over solely outward display. At Winter Haven BJJ, each vigorous hour spent on the mats training is seen as an opportunity to build confidence, discipline, with both mental and physical strength.
