2019 AAU Freestyle Judo Championships for Juniors/ Young Adults

2019 National AAU Freestyle Judo Championship for Juniors (ages 16-under) & Young Men/Young Women (ages 17-30) Saturday May 4th , 2019. All grapplers welcomed!

Iron Forged Martial Arts, Iron Forged Judo, and Platte River Judo would like to invite you to the 2019 National AAU Freestyle Judo Championship for Juniors & Young Adults in Colorado Springs, CO on Saturday, May 4th, 2019!   All grappling practitioners welcomed!

AAU Membership Cards-This is an AAU licensed event.  AAU membership must be obtained prior to the competition.  All contestants must obtain their AAU membership before the tournament and bring the printed-out AAU card with them to the weigh-ins/registration.  Memberships are available online at www.aausports.org

Check-ins/Weigh-ins/Walk Up Registration will take place at the tournament site Saturday May 4th 8-10 am.  All final age and weight categories are determined on the day of the event.  

Bracket System-Round Robin for Divisions of 3 or less. Modified Double Elimination for all others.

*Tournament Directors reserve the right to make changes in the interest of safety & fairness of all competitors.

Belts Rank belts will not be worn at this event. This event will utilize different colored belts (red & blue belts) to distinguish between competitors.  Tournament directors will have a small number of belts on hand but competitors are encouraged to provide their own for convenience.    

Uniforms-Freestyle Judo allows for the use of any color uniform EXCEPT Red.  Uniforms must be a sturdy Judo/grappling type, in good repair and free of any holes.  Excessive patches that may prohibit an opponent from gaining a grip or grabbing the uniform are not permitted.  Uniform must be properly sized and not so tight or short that it prevents the other player from taking a grip. 

Freestyle Judo Rules To insure objective and unbiased officiating points are assigned to a variety of skills.  Every attempt has been made to provide a safe and objective atmosphere that reflects all the attributes of Kodokan Judo.

How to Win                                                                                                                                                IPPON-via throw or submission                                                                                                                  SUPERIOR DECISION-12 Point Spread, such as 12-0,14-2,17-5                                                                    DECISION-Score more points than opponent at the end of scheduled match time.                                            OVERTIME-If no points are scored in scheduled match time, then a 1-minute overtime will be used.  The first        contestant to score will win.  If neither contestant scores an Ippon or points, then the referee and mat judges will declare the winner based on effective attacks.

How to Win for Age Groups                                                                                                                   Ages 15 and older: Ippon can be scored by a throw, choke or armlock.                                                          Ages 11 to 14: Ippon can be scored by a throw, pin (25 Seconds) or choke.                                                    Ages 10 and under: Ippon can be scored by a throw or pin (25 seconds).

Win by Ippon                                                                                                                                           THROW-Throw opponent with control and force on back or back/side.                                                            ARMLOCK-Opponent taps out or referee stops the contest.                                                                               CHOKE-Opponent taps out or referee stops the contest.                                                                                  PIN (Ages 14 and Under.) Hold opponent in Osaekomi for 25 seconds

*You must use a throw or takedown technique to go to the ground.  Pulling an opponent to the mat without attempting an actual throw is considered passive and will result in a penalty.

Scoring Points                                                                                                                                              4 POINTS (Waza-ari) THROW – Opponent lands mostly on the back or back side but not enough for Ippon.   PIN – Hold opponent for at least 20 seconds.

2 POINTS (Yuko) THROW – Opponent lands on side or back in what would be Yuko in regular AAU rules.       PIN – Hold opponent for at least 10 seconds.

1 POINT (Koka) THROW – Opponent lands on front torso (not hands and knees) or on buttocks or light on side. PIN – Hold opponent for at least 5 seconds. BREAKDOWN – Turn opponent onto back with control from a stable ground position. GUARD PASS – Get past opponent’s legs with control. GUARD SWEEP – Roll or sweep opponent over with control from the Guard position.

Spectator Passes can be purchased in advance at the time of registration or at the door the day of the event.  Cost is Individual $2,  Family with 5 or more members over 5 years $10, Children under 5 yrs free.
