Criteria for Combining Classes

1.- For Kids and Teens:

Due to various factors such as weight, age, and belt rank, it is not always possible to fill all classes with athletes. Therefore, classes need to be merged. We aim to ensure fairness, PREVENT SANDBAGGING, while also considering safety and participation.

Weight: Limit weight differences to a maximum of 4 kg, with a tolerance of 0.5 kg.

Age: Merge age groups as follows: 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13, 14-15, and 16-17 (with an age difference of up to one year, but not exceeding two chronological years). Teens 3 (15yrs) and Juveniles 1 (16yrs) may be combined if not enough registered athletes only upon agreement

Puberty: Recognize physical differences during puberty; it is important to consider age, skill level, and physical development. Ages 14-15 should not be merged with younger age groups. This also applies to juveniles (16-17 yrs). If teen classes are merged with juvenile classes (i.e. 15-16 yrs class), this will only occur with mutual agreement, and the rules for teen classes will ALWAYS apply.

Belt Rank: Merge white-gray, gray-yellow, and yellow-orange belts for children and juveniles. Due to their advanced skill level, green belts cannot be placed in merged classes but may be considered for specific agreed-upon matches with other colored belts. These matches must be approved by all parties. At the green belt level, athletes are expected to have a solid understanding of BJJ principles and concepts, including positioning, timing, and leverage. They should also be proficient in both offensive and defensive techniques.

Mixed Gender Classes: We try to avoid having boys and girls compete against each other. If there are no other options, boys and girls can compete together up to 9 years old. For athletes 10 years or older, parental/coach consent is required.

Limited Round-Robin: Will also be considered in a merged class where two athletes should not meet (in compliance with this criterion).

2.- For Juveniles:

Juveniles 1 and 2 may be merged if there are not enough competitors in each class.

Athletes turning 16 years old (Juvenile 1) in the current year must follow the belt system in Article 1.2 of the IBJJF Graduation System.

Sandbagging:

IT IS NOT ALLOWED that Juveniles who have been promoted to a colored belt while being kids/teens register and compete as white belts.

IT IS NOT ALLOWED to combine Juveniles with white and blue belts in a merged class.

Refunds:

We strive to find suitable matches for all athletes. If this is not possible, it will be communicated in advance. The athlete will be withdrawn, and the registration fee will be refunded.
