Cork Open MMA Spring 2018

MMA tournament under novice rules for age 12 - adult. Please read rules and criteria for categories carefully.

This tournament is a novice rules tournament with LIGHT CONTACT STRIKING rules.

Tournament Format:

The format of the tournament is double elimination (i.e. Each competitor must lose two matches to be out). There will be Gold, Silver and Bronze for each division. We will run the categories in order of age. Approximate times for fight will be displayed in real time on the smoothcomp.com system

Weigh-ins:

Weights will be check on the day starting at 9am and continue throughout the day. There are no allowances on the weight divisions. First fight will begin at 10am sharp. Fighters must weigh in at least 1 hour before their fight is scheduled.

Round Duration:

All divisions will have rounds of 2 x 2mins with a 45 second break between rounds.

Decisions:

If a bout goes the distance, the referee will make a decision. If declared a draw, a 3rd round will be fought.

Equipment:

7oz/8oz sparring MMA gloves (pro gloves not allowed)

Shin pads (with no metal clasps)

Gum shields and groin guards

Rashguard or fitted tshirt must be worn.

Definition of LIGHT CONTACT STRIKING:

All strikes must be thrown with control, meaning that there should be no intent for a KO. Spinning Backfist or Spinning hook kicks to the head are disallowed. Excessive contact will result in a warning first, with any subsequent infringement resulting in DQ. Videos describing this requirement will be posted in the lead up to the event.

This is a novice event, where none of the competitors are required to have MRI brain scans, therefore the level of strikes cannot be the same as amateur MMA. Coaches, please incorporate this level of striking into your preparation for this event. In essence the strikes will be thrown with the same power as sparring in the gym, with fights being won on skill, rather than power or aggression.

Illegal Techniques for all divisions include:
