Rules
Kosen Judo Rules
Standing attacks with leg grabbing are permitted (i.e., Morote-gari, Kata-guruma, Kuchiki-taoshi, Kibisu-gaeshi, Te-guruma, etc.).
- Guard pulling with at least one grip is permitted (hikikomi).
- All gripping types and grip breaking techniques are permitted.
- Competitors will be stood up only if: 1) both judokas are entangled in some form of guard with no clear attempt to improve the position for at least 30 seconds; 2) if one competitor stands up disengaging from Ne-waza.
- Refereeing will be done by local-level athletes and instructors.
Score System and Penalties
Ippon
- High impact throws (as per IJF standards).
- Submissions (Shime-waza and Kansetsu-waza) for all ages.
- 20s pins.
Waza-ari
- Lower impact throws (as per IJF standards).
- 10s hold-downs.
Hansoku-make (grave infringement)
- Immediate disqualification from the match: guard jumping, Kanibassami, slam.
- Immediate disqualification from the event: loss of consciousness, unsportsmanlike conduct.
Safety Stoppages (referee prerogative)
- Children and Teens: the referee will stop a fully extended Juji-gatame regardless of pain. The referee will stop an Ude-garami when the arm is at an unsafe angle.
Illegal Techniques
In addition to common sense illegal techniques (bitting, punching, etc.) the following techniques are considered illegal:
- Bending fingers backward.
- Guard jumping.
- Kanibassami (scissors takedown).
- Any hip, leg, or foot submission.
- Knee reaping (i.e., Ashi-garami).
- Spinal locks without a choke (i.e., twister, can opener).
- Slam (i.e., slamming an opponent to defend against a Sankaku-Jime. Slamming an opponent to open the guard, etc.).
- Wrist locks.
- Bicep slicer.
Legal Techniques
In addition to the standard IJF techniques and the ones previously discussed here, the following techniques WILL be allowed:
- Puling the head in a Sankaku-jime.
- Do-Jime (body or neck).
Match Time
- Children and Teens (up to 17 years old): 3 minutes + 2-minute golden score if needed.
- Seniors and Masters (18 or older): 4 minutes + 2-minute golden score if needed.
- In case of a draw, referees will determine the winner via a majority vote (two out of three).
BRACKETS
- Double Elimination brackets.
UNIFORM
- White and Royal Blue Judo Gis allowed.
AWARDS
- Individual: medals for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.
- Team: awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd teams.
