WEIGH-INS

ALL COMPETITORS MUST weigh-in at their dojo on Wednesday, June 12 or Thursday, June 13. Their weights (in pounds) must be reported by their instructors via email to Mike Tanimura [email protected] by 11:00 p.m. Thursday, June 13.

Weights will be verified (weight check with 3 lbs. allowance) when competitors check-in at the tournament and show their valid USA Judo membership card.

ELIGIBILITY

All participants must have an up-to-date national judo membership card (from USA Judo, ATJA or another country's judo federation) to present at tournament weight confirmation and check-in.

WHITE/BLUE - Judo Gis and Belts

Competitors MUST bring their own blue and white belts. If you bring a blue gi, you must also have a white gi. No blue gis are to be worn on the white side. No BJJ Gis Allowed. NO EXCEPTIONS!

REFEREES

Tohkon Classic 26 will be a National Referee Evaluation Site. There will be a clinic Friday evening at 6:00pm at the tournament site. (see schedule above). Our Referee Evaluation Committee members: Hector Estevez, IJF-A – Evaluator; David Smith, IJF-A – Evaluator; Mike Takada, IJF-A – Evaluator.

SHIAI OFFICIAL RULES, AGE/WEIGHT DIVISIONS

RULES: All participants will abide by IJF contest rules with the following modifications.

Kansetsu waza prohibited in all Junior and Adult Regular (non-advanced) divisions.

No Shime waza allowed in all Regular (non-advanced) Junior divisions.

Shime waza is allowed in Advanced Junior divisions for 13 years old and up.

No Kansetsu waza for any players under 17, unless they are playing in Senior Advanced.

Shime waza is allowed in all Senior and Veterans divisions.

Kansetsu waza is allowed in all Advanced Senior and Veterans divisions.

All participants will abide by current IJF medical rules, which stipulate if a contestant asks for a doctor, he or she forfeits that match.

Blue gis are optional. Appropriate undergarments must be worn by all athletes. Female athletes shall wear under the jacket either a plain white or off-white round-necked t-shirt with short sleeves, long enough to be worn inside the trousers, or a plain white or off-white leotard with short sleeves. No markings can be visible when the judo gi is done up. Athletes needing to change clothes/judo gis should do so in a restroom, locker room, or designated changing area.

Contest area will be 8 x 8 meters. Safety area will be 4 meters to adjoining mats and 3 meters everywhere else. The CARE system will be in effect.

DIVISIONS: This tournament will use true double elimination for divisions of 6 or more. Divisions of 3 to 5 will use round robin. Contestants in divisions of 1 or 2 will be moved to other divisions with their approval or will be refunded their registration fee. The Tournament Director reserves the right to make any changes that are in the best interest of contestants and to achieve fairness and competition. 

For Junior boys and girls, 9-10 years of age, orange belt and above will be considered Advanced. For Junior boys and girls 11-16 years of age, green belt and above will be considered Advanced. For the Senior divisions, brown and black belts will be considered Advanced players. Men’s Senior division is based on IJF standard weights. Senior Advanced Men's and Women's matches will run four (4) minutes. Senior Regular, Veterans and Junior matches will run three (3) minutes. Golden Score period is indefinite until match can be awarded. Participants are entitled to rest between matches in the same division equal to the match length. Four or five mat areas will be used.

Juniors: brackets will be created with appropriate weight ranges:

  • Regular Divisions: All Ranks 5 & 6 Light/Med/Heavy, 7 & 8 Light/Med/Heavy, 9 & 10 (yellow belt and under) Light/Med/Heavy, 11 & 12 (orange belt and under) Light/Med/Heavy, 13 & 14 (orange belt and under) Light/Med/Heavy, 15 & 16 (orange belt and under) Light/Med/Heavy
  • Advanced Divisions: 9 & 10 (orange belt and higher) Light/Med/Heavy, 11 & 12 (green belt and higher) Light/Med/Heavy, 13 & 14 (green belt and higher) Light/Med/Heavy, 15 & 16 (green belt and higher) Light/Med/Heavy

Senior Men:  Regular and Advanced Divisions- under 60 kg/132.3 lb., under 66 kg/145.5 lb., under 73 kg/161 lb., under 81 kg/178.6 lb., under 90 kg/198.4 lb., under 100 kg/220.5 lb., over 100 kg/220.5 lb.

Senior Women: brackets will be created with appropriate weight ranges:

  • Regular Divisions - Light/Med/Heavy
  • Advanced Divisions - Light/Med/Heavy (IJF weight divisions will be used when possible)

Veterans Men: brackets will be created with appropriate weight ranges:

  • 30-39 Light/Med/Heavy
  • 40+ Light/Med/Heavy

Veterans Women: brackets will be created with appropriate weight ranges:

  • 30+ Light/Med/Heavy

Junior Division: Open to Judoka who are 16 and under on June 15, 2024; male, female and mixed teams allowed. $35 per person for first kata, $20 for additional, if registered by 11:59 p.m. June 3. June 4 to June 12, $50 per person for first kata, $30 for additional.

  • Novice Nage-no-Kata — Requirements: First three sets of Nage-no-Kata (Te-, Koshi- and Ashi-waza) 
  • Advanced Nage-no-Kata — Requirements: Full five sets of Nage-no-Kata  
  • Novice Ju-no-Kata — Requirements: First set – five techniques 
  • Advanced Ju-no-Kata — Requirements: Full three sets – 15 techniques

Senior Division: Judoka who are 13 and over may compete; male, female and mixed teams allowed. $40 per person for first kata, $25 for additional, if registered by 11:59 p.m. June 3. June 4 to June 12, $55 per person for first kata, $35 for additional.

AWARDS

Medals will be awarded to all 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in all kata and shiai divisions

The Kata team that demonstrates superior skill will be awarded the Joanne Barthold Memorial Cup.

The Senior Shiai player who demonstrates superior skill and spirit will be awarded the Tohkon Fighting Spirit Cup.

The Junior Shiai player who demonstrates superior skill and spirit will be awarded the Jerry Okubo Memorial Cup.

GLOBAL KIDS JUDO NETWORK (GKJN) CUP JUDO CLINIC & JUNIOR TEAM TOURNAMENT - SUNDAY, JUNE 16, 2024

GKJN CUP JUDO CLINIC

The clinic, open to all judoka – Senior, Junior and Veterans – will be taught by Megumi Ishikawa, Godan, and Ryunosuke Haga, Godan.

Megumi Ishikawa is a 3-time winner of the Kodokan Cup, and at 57 kg has one Continental Championship Gold and three Continental Open Golds. Her favorite tachiwaza is Uchimata, but her specialty is her awesome Newaza techniques!

Ryunosuke Haga is the 2015 World Championship, 2016 Rio Olympics Bronze Medalist at -100kg. He is also 2-time Grand Slam Gold medalist and 3-time Kodokan Cup Gold medalist. He is still an active competitor for the Asahikasei Company Team. Haga's Uchimata is famous all over the world!

JUNIOR TEAM TOURNAMENT

Junior judoka 16-years-old and under can participate in the GKJN Cup Junior Team Tournament. The Tournament Director will create well-balanced boys teams and girls teams from the Junior competitors present. These teams will be based on age, proficiency and weight. Since team competition is relatively rare in the United States, judoka will be taught team-play etiquette and rules by the Referee Technical Director.

Teams will compete in a single-elimination tournament to determine the top teams. Each member of the first, second and third place boys teams and first, second and third place girls teams will receive GKJN Cup custom-designed medals.

RULES: All participants will abide by IJF contest rules with the following modifications. No chokes for players under 13. No arm bars. All participants will abide by current IJF medical rules, which stipulate if a contestant asks for a doctor, he or she forfeits that match. Matches will run three (3) minutes. Blue Gis are optional. Contest area will be 8 x 8 meters. Safety area will be 4 meters to adjoining mats and 3 meters everywhere else. The CARE system will be in effect.

TEAM COMPOSITION: Teams will be composed of 5 members, with one each in the following ages: 8 and under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16. There will be Boys teams and Girls teams. Weight match-ups will be carefully monitored. Weights will be verified for competitors who did not compete in the Tohkon Classic tournament on Saturday. Coaches will review the teams, and competition will not proceed until all Tournament officials and coaches agree the team compositions are as equitable as possible.

To register for the GKJN Cup Judo Clinic and Junior Team Tournament use the SmoothComp On-line registration.  On-line registration only, cut-off at 11:59 p.m. Central Time June 12, 2024. No day-of registrations.

WEIGH-INS

Junior weights for the Tohkon Classic will be used for the GKJN Cup Junior Team Tournament. If a Junior DID NOT weigh in for the Tohkon Classic, their accurate weight must be sent to Mike Tanimura [email protected] by 11:00 p.m., Thursday, June 13, 2024.

REGISTRATION FEES

$40 registration fee, whether you are an adult registering for the Clinic only, or a Junior registering for the Clinic and Tournament, the entry fees are the same. This entry fee amazingly includes:

  • FREE Japanese lunch;
  • FREE Commemorative t-shirt if you register by 11:59 p.m. June 3, 2024. No guarantees on correct sizes if you register later. After June 3, 2024 you may purchase a t-shirt for $20;
  • for Juniors 16 and under, entry in the Team Tournament. Teams will be determined by the Tournament Director. Prizes will be award to the first, second and third place teams.

  • Plus many other special prizes will be raffled at the GKJN Cup Team Tournament.

Parents and other guests who are not registering and participating in the Judo activities will have an opportunity to purchase lunch on-site.

MINOR ATHLETE PREVENTION POLICIES

The Center for SafeSport has developed the Minor Athlete Prevention Policies (MAAPP) which USA Judo has adapted to our own sport. The MAAPP is a collection of proactive and training policies comprised of two parts:Education & Training Policy that requires training for certain Adult Participants and the Required Prevention;Policies, focused on limiting one-on-one interactions between Adult Participants and Minor Athletes to prevent abuse.
