Studio 23 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is based in the heart of Borneo, Kuching, Sarawak Currently, the gym is led by Professor Ivan Evetovics, who, in 2022, received his black belt from Professor Adam Shahir Kayoom under Mestre Ricardo Liborio lineage. This made him Sarawak's very own first home grown Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt. The Studio 23 BJJ team was founded by Coach Albert Lim, the pioneer of BJJ in Sarawak. The gym opened its doors in January 2009 to the public, making it the very first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu dojo in Sarawak. The early days were 'frontier' jiu jitsu in its truest sense: one coach with one or two dedicated students for quite a while. Through Albert's deep enthusiasm, intense passion and unwavering determination, the team gained momentum and continued to blossom. As we added new teammates, we started to compete regionally. The philosophy from the beginning was this: competition is not compulsory but it is encouraged as way to test your Jiu jitsu in the forge of tournaments. By the mid 2010s Studio 23 has become known regionally as a competitive team who produces champions seemingly out of nowhere. The team, under coach Albert Lim was also ahead of the curve in the leg lock revolution and were exploring very technical setups from the onset. We also produced the first Sarawakian female MMA champion. Despite our competitive accomplishments the emphasis from the very beginning was to create a supportive community where people can learn the beautiful art of Jiu Jitsu in a practical, safe and fun environment. This continues to be our main mission and we encourage everyone to join us on the amazing journey that is Jiu Jitsu
