Professor Lopez began training when he was 16 years old with John De La O. He went on to train with Pride fighter Chris Brennan, Marco Ruas, the King of the Streets, and at Cal State Long Beach with Eddie Martinez. In 2008, Professor Lopez fought at the Pan Ams and won gold as a purple belt Masters. In his 30s, Professor Lopez walked into John Machado's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy, where he earned his black belt (2013). Professor Lopez trained and taught for John Machado for several years before creating his own club. October 23, 2021, Professor Lopez was awarded 3 stripes, making him a third degree black belt under John Machado. Professor Lopez teaches with the same mentality, technique and skillset as the Machados. He teaches everyone as a black belt, regardless of experience.
