Tournament Rules

This tournament is open to all contestants at least five (5) years of age on the day of competition and who are registered members in good standing with the United States Judo Federation (USJF), United States Judo, Inc. (USA Judo), or United States Judo Association (USJA). All contestants must present a current and valid USJF, USA Judo or USJA membership registration card as proof of insurance at the time of registration. Competitors will not be allowed to compete if they do not provide proof of membership and insurance from one of the indicated organizations.

All matches will be conducted using the current IJF Contest Rules with the following modifications:

1.    Contest area shall be 6x6 meters with 4-meter safety area between competition areas and 3-meter outside border.

2.    The CARE system may be in use, if not three referees will be on the mat.

3.    Any competitor who suffers a concussion (as determined by the medical staff) and /or who losses consciousness from head impact will not be allowed to continue competing in the tournament that day in any division.  If a competitor suffers such an injury, they are strongly advised to obtain a medical release from their personal physician before returning to train and compete in Judo.

4.       Players who are choked out are NOT allowed to continue to compete in the tournament.

5.       Pre-2003 medical rules

All competitors MUST wear Judogi that comply with current IJF Judogi specifications regarding size.

White judogi is mandatory.  A blue Judogi is optional for blue side only.

Contestants must bring their own blue and white belts.

      

The Tournament Committee reserves the right to make any necessary changes in the best interest of the sport and the competitors. Divisions may be combined at the discretion of the tournament committee.

Uncontested Divisions and Multiple Division Entries

A division is uncontested if it contains only a single competitor.

During registration the Athlete may give guidance on how they wish to be moved if their division is uncontested.

If an Athlete does not give the tournament bracketing team guidance, You agree to be placed in a bracket at the tournament bracketing teams discretion.

If the Athlete is unable to be moved to a competitive division, they will be informed and a full refund will be issued.

For Both 2nd entries in the same age group, and uncontested Athletes the guidance choices are.

  • I would like to compete with higher rank competitors.
  • I would like to compete with heavier weight competitors.
  • I would like to compete with both heavier weight and higher rank competitors
  • If I am uncontested in the entered age category, I would like to move up an age division.
  • If I am uncontested I would like to Withdraw.

The Tournament Director and Bracketing Team reserve the right to over-ride this guidance if the need arises for safe and fair competition.

Competitor No-shows

An Athlete will be considered a No-Show if they fail to check in at least 30 minutes prior to their scheduled first match.

A Check in No-Show will be considered as a division withdrawal with no refund.

An Athlete will also be considered a No-Show, if they fail to appear for a match after two calls, each thirty-seconds apart. For those competing in more than one division the one-minute time limit shall also apply.

A match No-Show will be considered as a loss for the No-Show.

It is every competitor’s responsibility to review their brackets and times throughout the day as they may change. Match times in Smoothcomp are dynamic and change as the tournament progresses. Be aware that the time changes may be significant. Divisions will not be re-fought due to competitor no shows. Competitors will not be refunded if they miss their division.

Method of Shiai Competition

-   Competition Method/ Format for Jr & Youth Novice (the division consists of white/yellow belts) and all Divisions with four (4), or three (3) competitors will be a Round Robin Pool.

-    Competition Method/ Format for all Divisions with five (5) or more competitors except Jr. and Youth Novice ( majority of division is white/ yellow belts)  will be the Modified Double Elimination with single Bronze medal System with winner’s and loser’s brackets. 

-          A Division with only two (2) competitors will be a “Best out of Three” division.

-           No awards will be given for an Uncontested Division.

Dojo Points

Dojo points are awarded as follows; five (5) points for division first place, three (3) points for division second place, and one (1) point for division third place. Points will not be awarded for uncontested divisions. Awards of first, second and third place will be given to the three highest scoring dojos.
