Procedures
Kata – A competitive kata division will be held. The primary purpose of this division is to encourage youth and novice interest in kata competition and to provide a grassroots kata competition experience. Kata teams may be of any age and pairing. There will be two divisions:
- Nage no Kata
- Any other Kodokan Judo Kata (e.g. Katame no Kata).
The kata team must demonstrate at least 1 segment of a kata to compete. A black belt panel will individually score the kata. Written feedback will be given to each team complimenting and encouraging strengths and suggesting 1-2 improvements. First, second and third place awards will be given in each division. Youth awards will be presented during break between youth and adult competition and for adults following the end of adult competition.
Shiai – Current International Judo Federation (IJF) under USA JUDO, contest rules are used:
- Shime-waza (choking techniques) will be allowed for 13 and older (Juvenile, Cadet, and Senior categories).
- Kansetsu-waza (joint lock techniques) will be allowed for those 17 and older and competing in the brown/black divisions. Those ranked lower than 3rd kyu brown belt may compete in brown/black divisions with a Black Belt’s coach’s signature.
- A modified double elimination or round-robin format will be used. All competitors will have at least 2 matches.
- First, second and third place awards will be given in each division. Awards will be presented during breaks in the competition.
